Trump is actually genuine and personable in private. People often say– when one on one or in a small group, he listens, asks questions, doesn't talk about himself, and continually makes sure everyone is taken care of.
In public a different side of Trump kicks in.
Trump is a performer, not a politician. Politicians often get away with saying falsities while appearing genuine. By contrast, performers often speak hyperbolically or sensationally, saying things that are directionally true, just exaggerated.
So when people listen to Trump through the politician lens, they might assume he's lying, when he's really just being hyperbolic or sensational, which is what performers do.
